Beijing, a city of 22 million people, has more 5G cells than the entire United States, with 10 times the population. All are 100 MHz+, either in midband or 700 MHz. Speeds will generally be in the hundreds of megabits and occasionally a gigabit.
5G covers the heart of the city, the area illustrated at left. That’s about 10 million people. There’s also good coverage of the rest of the city and almost all of urban China.
A government report claims the cells are connected by a 1 ms ring. 1 ms almost certainly is not the average speed between 2 locations, which will often require passing through several routers. My source wasn’t explicit about what was measured.
Verizon’s city networks are built to a 5-15 ms backhaul, which is why Verizon specifies its “ultra-low latency 5G Edge Network” at 20-35 ms. Given that Verizon’s 4G network is typically 22-40 ms, the claim of “ultra-low latency” is simply false advertising. I doubt the Chinese are down to 3-10 ms for the Edge, which is possible in the lab, but I bet the Beijing Edge will be much faster than NY or Boston.
Perhaps most interesting is
The world’s first high-level autonomous driving demonstration zone in Phase 1.0 in the Economic Development Zone, and took the lead in the world to practice the “vehicle-road coordination” technical route, and opened up scenes such as unmanned rental, unmanned distribution, unmanned cleaning, etc., cloud control platform infrastructure The construction is completed, the collection and production of high-precision maps for vehicles is completed, the integrated navigation data and operating data of the vehicle are uploaded in real time, and the cloud driving control information is issued in real time.
Next time someone in DC says the US is the leader in 5G, please laugh out loud.

On November 25, the 35th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 15th Beijing Municipal People’s Congress heard the “Report on the Construction and Application of New Infrastructure”.
Entrusted by the municipal government, Yang Xiuling, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, made the “Report on the Construction and Application of New Infrastructure”. In her report, she introduced Beijing’s achievements in the construction of new infrastructure since June 2020. According to the report, as of the end of September this year, Beijing had built 47,000 5G base stations, with a total of 428,000 gigabit fixed-line users, and built a 1 millisecond delay circle in the city.
Beijing’s 5G network basically achieves continuous coverage within the Fifth Ring Road and the sub-center
The report mentioned that as of the end of September this year, Beijing had built 47,000 5G base stations, ranking first in the country in the number of base stations per 10,000 people, basically realizing continuous coverage within the Fifth Ring Road and sub-centers, and precise coverage of key areas outside the Fifth Ring Road. 5G terminal users accounted for 32.4% of mobile users. Leading in innovation in the 5G industry, leading companies in the field of radio frequency devices and test instruments have accelerated their cultivation, and 8 areas including 5G+ HD live broadcast, smart logistics, and autonomous driving are vigorously developing.
The innovation of car networking management policy, road opening mileage, and industrial ecological construction lead the country. 278 open test roads were 1,028 kilometers, and the safety test mileage exceeded 3.13 million kilometers. Built the world’s first high-level autonomous driving demonstration zone in Phase 1.0 in the Economic Development Zone, and took the lead in the world to practice the “vehicle-road coordination” technical route, and opened up scenes such as unmanned rental, unmanned distribution, unmanned cleaning, etc., cloud control platform infrastructure The construction is completed, the collection and production of high-precision maps for vehicles is completed, the integrated navigation data and operating data of the vehicle are uploaded in real time, and the cloud driving control information is issued in real time.
In addition, the report also revealed that as of the end of September this year, Beijing’s gigabit fixed-line network had accumulatively reached 428,000 households, building a 1 millisecond delay circle in the city. The broadband government affairs private network realizes the continuous outdoor coverage of the six districts of the city and the main urban areas of the suburbs, the continuous outdoor coverage of key expressways, and the indoor coverage of the venues of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Digital government affairs “One Net Office” covers the four-level service system of urban neighborhoods
Beijing promotes the promotion of digital technology in the field of smart cities and people’s livelihood, forming a “new leader” for demonstration applications. The report mentioned that Beijing plans to complete the smart city “a set of networks” and implement it in the Economic Development Zone; start the construction of a transportation time-space map.
The digital government “one network is integrated” covers the four-level service system of urban neighborhoods and neighborhoods, and 90.17% of the matters at the municipal level and 81.8% of the district level have achieved the “one network.” The work plan of “One Network Unified Management” for urban operation has been compiled and completed. 9 districts including Xicheng, Haidian and Chaoyang will build “urban brains”.
”Orderly promote the traffic perception system, traffic data zone, autonomous driving, three-dimensional traffic linkage management, and optimize travel services. Coordinate the construction of the ecological environment, gardens, water affairs and other perception monitoring systems, and initially realize the monitoring information linkage.” The report mentioned, construction ” “Smart Education Demonstration Zone”, promote smart classrooms, “Internet + basic education”.
In addition, with 15 scene applications such as residents and medical institutions as breakthrough points, Beijing has perfected the city’s unified medical and health platform. In the form of “online release + scenic spot travel”, 10 featured tourist routes were launched, 5G smart theaters were built, and “online + offline” intangible cultural heritage experience activities were carried out.
Improve the 5G network coverage of the subway and implement a batch of 5G+ application projects
The reporter was informed that in order to further expand the coverage of new infrastructure, more new models that meet the needs of the market and the public will be introduced, and Beijing’s innovation leadership in the field of new infrastructure will be consolidated and enhanced. In the next step, Beijing will forwardly formulate a standard and normative system around technology research and development, project implementation, maintenance and management, to form Beijing standards and Beijing plans, and strive to rise to form national standards, national plans, and even global standards and global plans.
For example, in the field of Internet of Vehicles, explore and introduce technical standards such as vehicle-road coordination, test demonstrations, and digital intersections, copy and promote the standard results of high-level autonomous driving demonstration zones in the Economic Development Zone; accelerate the standardized dismantling of government services, and increase the coverage of “one network” Wait.
In addition, Beijing will continue to promote the in-depth coverage of 5G, gigabit fixed network, Internet of Vehicles, industrial Internet, and new computing power facilities, while enhancing the common support capabilities of the “seven connections and one leveling” of smart cities. Focus on accelerating the pilot construction of a dedicated communication network for smart cities in the Economic Development Zone; promote the construction of the perception system, and formulate and implement the overall plan for the construction of a new smart city perception system.
In terms of “new infrastructure” in the future, what are the landmark projects and projects to be launched?
The report revealed that it will increase the coverage of the 5G network of the city’s sub-centers and core areas, major highways and trunk lines, and subways, and implement a batch of 5G+ application projects; promote the 2.0 stage construction of high-level autonomous driving demonstration zones; use the industrial Internet to empower Industrial upgrading; support the landing of satellite Internet projects.
Build an artificial intelligence super computing center to increase the scale of computing power; build a blockchain open source platform to promote the implementation of blockchain application scenarios; accelerate the construction of big data platform 2.0. Build Sino-German and Sino-Japanese International Industrial Parks.
